Ride-Along: Guest Journalist

Narrative: EVA10.15 was intended as a quick and dirty outing to Trinity Lake to allow me to perform a few more biological transects. The plan was to use the road formed by HMP and go straight to Trinity Lake, do my work, and take the road straight back. Trinity Lake is clearly visible from the Hab windows; we look at it every day. On top of all this, Andy had been there before. Bottom line: we thought we'd find the lake with no trouble. I estimate that I used about 75% of the road if I combine the outbound and inbound legs of the trip. Almost directly south of the Hab the road changes direction from S to roughly SW; the turn occurs at 0421289E 8371737N. I noticed an unbelievable amount of plant life along our course; to avoid damaging the area, I kept to the road, to the stream where there was no road, and to rocks where there was neither road nor stream. I overshot Lake Trinity, turning around at 0419307E 8371564N. Instead of descending down to the lake itself, I opted to stay on a high ridge (0420280E 8370788N). I performed my biology transects (see bio report), then we navigated back to the Hab with no difficulty, sticking to the road as much as possible.

Narrative: Our EVA started by going to Cabin Rock (0418913 8368855), a possible large ejecta erratic where the team spent some time observing and documenting the rock and immediate area. We then headed SW to scout an area of special interest to the geologists and to locate the SW survey marker. On a hill top close to where we suspected the marker to be, near a small lake, we documented the valleys surrounding the hill since the scientist back on earth were interested in the deposition of these valleys. With Tiziana's eagle eyes we were able to spot the marker from this hill. We were very excited and proceeded to the hill with the marker. Once at the hill we continued to document the area and noticed an area of layered rock. We then proceeded to the layered rock by traveling through some amazing canyons. We continued our journey to our final destination of the impact melt site which the geologist were eager to see. This was our farest point on this EVA and it was not what the geologist were expecting. However, after five hours the team decided to go home but to look at some other sites and routes along the way.
