Mission Update - July 11, 2005
Andy Wegner - Resolute Bay
After being stranded for three days in our staging area at Resolute Bay, we were finally underway to Devon Island! The Twin Otter aircraft, loaded with the first two of our team and a portion of our supplies, taxied down the runway … only to make an abrupt turn and head back to the terminal. "That flight was shorter than you thought, wasn’t it?", smiled the pilot, "It’s a scrub. Fog’s rolling out of the crater and across the landing strip. Maybe later guys." Yesterday we waited all day for a plane to free up, only to have increasing crosswinds dash our hopes. Such is the nature of travel in the far north. It is not that we don’t appreciate the hospitality of South Camp Inn – delicious meals at 6, 12, and 6; hot showers; soft beds; interesting people – but this is not what we are here for.
Nor has our time at Resolute been wasted. We conducted an arctic geology orientation tour of the area; we trained on the use of ATV’s; we solved complex configuration problems with our satellite com system (to be our only link with the outside world); we moved the ATV’s and other equipment to the airport; EVA missions were planned; instruments were calibrated, space suits repaired, strategy discussions held, food supplies inventoried, last minute equipment acquired, and extensive first aid and emergency response training sessions held. But we are running out of productive things to do. It is time to go to analog Mars!
