Dr. Jan Osburg

FMARS-8 Crew Portrait - Dr. Jan OsburgJan Osburg is an aerospace engineer specializing in manned spaceflight systems and interdisciplinary design methodologies. His areas of expertise are Human Factors, medical issues, life support systems, and associated simulation software. As a crewmember at the Mars Desert Research Station in Utah, he has first-hand experience with space mission simulations. During FMARS 2003, Dr. Osburg will be the Health, Safety and Security Officer as well as the radiocommunications system engineer. In addition to these duties, he will perform research in the areas of Human Factors and atmospheric science. As president of the Mars Society Georgia Chapter, he will also work on several outreach projects in his home state.

Prior to moving to the United States, Dr. Osburg worked as a research engineer and lecturer at the University of Stuttgart in Germany where he gave classes on space stations and ran international workshops on space station design while working on his doctoral degree. His dissertation, titled "An Interdisciplinary Approach to the Conceptual Design of Inhabited Space Systems", won a national award. In 1996, he received a Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia, where he studied probabilistic design methodologies and worked on the conceptual design of supersonic passenger aircraft. His personal interests include hiking, diving, and sailing, not to mention fine dining. He resides in Columbus, Georgia, with his wife and daughter.
