FMARS-8 Crew Biographies
April Childress
April Childress holds an MA in English from the University of Arkansas and is an Instructor of English at Greenville Technical College in Greenville, South Carolina. There, she teaches writing and literature classes; additionally, she does occasional editing and technical writing. As a member of Crew 15 at MDRS, she served as crew journalist; she will be serving in the same capacity at FMARS.
April's task at Flashline is to record the day-to-day lives of the crew and to bring Mars on Earth to life for those who can only read about it. She will describe the FMARS experience day-to-day, writing about life in sim so that those who can't come to Devon Island themselves can get a feel for the experience.
People look to others to explain experiences they cannot have; that's why she reads works by the Victorians: they inexorably stretched the knowledge and physical capabilities of mankind. Darwin shook up those who thought they knew themselves and their place in the world. Brunel stretched his bridge across the Avon Gorge; Morse and others developed the telegraph. The idea of reaching beyond expectations draws April to serve as a volunteer for the Mars Society-it's an opportunity to further man's efforts to reach the red planet, a goal to explore and to do what some say can't be done.
When not in sim, April and her husband Jody Tinsley enjoy recycling and reusing things, listening to the Atlanta Braves on the radio, taking long trips, and spending time in the woods. |
