FMARS Temperature Variations
On August 15, 2001, Mars Researcher Charles Cockells left about 50 Onset Hobo data loggers scattered around different endolithic bacteria rocks near the FMARS Hab. Eleven months later on July 10, the first day of the 2002 FMARS Field season, K. Mark Caviezel found one and successfully downloaded all the data into his computer. As a result, we now have temperature data for the past year. The Hobo was reset and replaced. The unit was set to grab two temperature readings every two hours. The battery in the unit measured 3/4 full after sitting up there for a year. Judging from the data, it is most likely that one probe was left in direct sun while the other was positioned in a shaded area. Below is an initial graph created from the data, showing temperature variations for a year on Devon Island, (readings in degrees Celsius)
Here is the rest of the year, by month, to show the dramatic temperature swings in this arctic desert. Click on a thumbnail for a larger view.
