EVA Highlights:
EVA Call Sign: EVA-5
Date: 16-July-2002

FMARS EVA Table

The EVA started with exterior hatch egress at 12:37 local time. The tools and the sampling container was tied to the back of one of the bigger ATVs using the orange strap as well as the bungee cord. Returned at 4:10 pm CDT.

Pre-EVA Operations:
Nominal.

Airlock Ingress/Depress:
Normal ingress and depress.

EVA Activities:

After the Hab was advised of our departure we took off with destination Marine rock. On the way we followed the ATV tracks that provide guidance all the way from the hab, across the river, further on through von Braun Planetia up to Marine Rock. In order to minimise the distance to be covered on food carrrying the heavy tools the ATV loaded with the equipment was driven up the low ridge at the base of Marine Rock. The other ATV was left below the ridge. First the heavy tools as well as the sample container were brought up to the sampling site. After the final sampling site was identified, the toolbox was carried up as well. The difference in elevation covered was about 10 metres.

At the site first a general characterisation was carried out including the determination of the geographic location of the sampling site. The UTM coordinates of the site are 0418585E, 8475230N, with an accuracy of 3.8 metres. At the site the sampling process was carried out as planned. After that is was decided to survey a rock that apparently broke off Marine rock and tumbled down the slope. The tools were carried back to the ATV and then Shannon and Markus went on foot to the bolder at the base of Marine Rock. Shannon took a number of samples while Markus took a picture of the sampling site from the base of Marine Rock. It was decided that an outcrop at the tip of the outflow of von Braun Planetia should be scouted for possible sampling sites suitable for the MASSE sample extraction demonstration mission.

The outcrop at the geographic UTM location 0420786E, 8374014N was found to be interesting with large chunks of solid rock. There is however a possibility that the whole structure was carried to the location by glacial action. Markus walked around the rock in order to search for possible sampling sites. A number of sampling sites were identified, but not recorded, because the in situ character of the whole structure is questionable. After finishing the work at the new site, that we named Hellas Rock we returned to the hab where the EVA was ended by external hatch ingress at 16:10 local time.

Post EVA Ingress and Cleanup:
Normal ingress and cleanup.
